Interesting discussion, guys (as always). I do think the fact that the Transfiguration is essentially a visionary experience, granted to Jesus and Peter, James, and John, rules out Moses and Elijah being ghosts, even in your stated technical definition; but thats a minor nitpick.
Without discounting the possibility of demonic activity, I think the greater danger of psychics and mediums (so called) is that they use all kinds of tricks to get people to believe they know more than they actually do. The “cold reading” techniques of folks like John Edward (of “Crossing Over”) have been well-documented: they read body language, employ confederates, make lucky guesses, etc. Books like “Flim-Flam” by James Randi and “Demon-Haunted World” by Carl Sagan talk about this (no, these authors are not friendly to genuine faith; nonetheless, they have done a lot of good in exposing the scams a lot of “psychis” are running to prey on people’s emotional vulnerability just to get money out of them).
