Darren Aronofsky Says Noah Will Be a Big Event Film

June 20, 2011

Darren Aronofsky has made some of the most artfully crafted films in cinema history with Pi, The Fountain and last years Black Swan. For the past few months it has been up in the air on what he would direct next with his drop out of The Wolverine. We know that he is set to direct the pilot for HBO’s Hobgoblin but he has also been shopping around Noah, his $150 million take on the story of Noah’s Ark.

It is announced that New Regency is up for paying for half the film however they still need another studio to put up the other half. Aronofsky it seems is planning to downplay the religious aspect of the story and concentrate on making it a tent pole film. This may in fact be the biggest film he has ever attempted to take on.

At the Provincetown Film Festival, Aronofsky told IFC,

“I don’t think it’s a very religious story… I think it’s a great fable that’s part of so many different religions and spiritual practices. I just think it’s a great story that’s never been on film.”

Aronofsky wants to make Noah a huge event film, and rightly so. With a budget of $150 million what other kind of film is there? However as can be expected with all of his films we should not expect a family friendly Sunday school take of this story. He is stated at saying that the stories that enlighten Noah “are not PG in any way,”

He also had this to say about the character,

“He’s a dark, complicated character. The tragedies we perform on each other are so well reported. Quite clearly, the planet is dying, and we are dying on it.”

John Logan (The Last Samurai, Rango, Gladiator) is on board to rewrite the script. Aronofsky continues to say, “ No comment” when it comes to the rumor that Christian Bale will be playing the lead role. One has to question this since it is reported that he said this with a grin.

I’m looking forward to the film. I’m pleased that Aronofsky did not have to go make the graphic novel he planned to do on the story first to prove to studios that this would be a property worth financing. It goes to show that movies can indeed be made without preexisting forms.

  1. I agree with your point about the graphic novel but at the same time, a Noah gn would be kinda awesome!

I’m crossing my fingers on this one. I think it has a change to be really great.

Yeah I would love to see one too.

  3. I love the idea of this movie. I can foresee a lot of people getting upset when they go to see this movie expecting a Biblically accurate story though lol.

I hope this doesn’t mean he’s planning on making the flood into a “the earth is dying because of our destructive ways” thing. When making a film about Noah you can’t go taking too many liberties on the cause of the flood.
