Let Sleeping Dogs Li(v)e? (Movie News)

It’s live! It’s live!

The trailer for Tim Burton’s upcoming feature-length, stop-motion animation adaptation of his 1984 live-action short Frankenweenie, that is.

I first saw the original short on the Sci-Fi Channel’s Exposures anthology circa 2000 (back in the days when Sci-Fi still cared about sci-fi), and have since seen it again as an extra feature on The Nightmare Before Christmas. Of all the Tim Burton projects I’ve seen, Frankenweenie may just be my favorite–and I’m not even a dog lover! I do, however, enjoy reimaginings of the Frankenstein mythos, and this Fido-friendly one looks to be, like its precedessor, brilliant and beautiful and surprisingly touching.

If you haven’t seen the original, make sure you do before enjoying the new version this fall. I don’t want to spoil anything, but let’s just say that–as you can gather from the trailer–the dog’s new leash on life creates numerous complications. Playing God generally does, as all Frankenstein stories remind us–even when the mad scientist is just a kid who just wants his best friend back.

Freaky is the perfect word to describe this.
