Official “Man of Steel” Trailer #2

December 11, 2012

“My father believed… the world wasn’t ready. What do you think?”

Hm. The only really “off” moment seems to be Pa Kent considering, even for a second, that Clark should’ve let an innocent victim die for the sake of protecting his identity, but we’ll see how that plays in context. For now, it looks pretty impressive, if dark and moody. Guess that’s gonna be “in” for 2013, between Supes and Star Trek.

What say you?

Yes, and yet that moment where he says that, what a subtle bit of acting Kevin Costner is doing. He can’t look his son in the eye when he says it.

I have a problem with it, too, but also agree that in context there may be (must be) more to it.

I ask one thing of this Superman movie: inspire me. It’s not hip, it’s not vogue, I don’t care. I will be harder on this than other movies because of what it should be. Give me characters grappling with moral dilemmas, give me dark, give me brutal . . . I don’t care, as long as you, in the end, inspire me with a character who rises above it.

Is that too much to ask? Well, yes . . . but I don’t care.

No, absolutely. Well said, Ben. I agree completely. It has a high standard to measure up to.

  2. YES! I think it looks fantastic. A real character drama, with a super looking man. I’m ready for it!

I dunno, I am not sold on his “look” yet. But I was raised on Chris Reeve, so, we’ll see.

  3. Look for this movie to share some themes from The Dark Knight.

  4. Yep. Everybody’s Dark and Twisty this year. I agree with Ben. Take ’em as low as you want, have ’em struggle, but hey! He’s Superman. He’s gotta do the right thing in the end.

I looked at Pa’s moment as being the struggle of a parent. He is trying to balance his morals with his very pragmatic need to protect his son. For a franchise that has been accused of making Superman a boy scout with handles all morals questions without a struggle at times I found it refreshing for there to be some gray in Pa’s response. I am assuming at some point since this is superman that high road will emerge from the gray questions.

You make a good point, Daniel. I do hope that is the direction they are taking this.
