My wife and I watched The Fountain the other night simply to keep pace with the SFC. Thanks for giving us an excuse to catch up with the movie — very thought-provoking.
Matt: We both said “tree rings” the moment we saw Bald Tommy’s tattoos. So we’re with you there.
Ben: I hadn’t noticed the three parallel upside down “hero embarking” shots. That’s just brilliant filmmaking. And I agree with your interpretation — it’s a classic “hero shot” but flipping the camera implies that there is something “off” or unnatural about the quest.
Finally, it’s probably pretty obvious, but do you think that the Mayan with the flaming sword was a reference to the cherubim at the end of Genesis 3?
Definitely an interesting film. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it at first, but it’s managed to “stick” with me. So, good job, The Fountain.
