I would highly recommend reading ‘Hard to Be a God’ book as in my opinion it’s more deep (and definately less gross and depressing) than weird movie adaptation by Alexei German.
Actually I’d go even further and suggest checking out some other sci-fi novels by the Strugatsky brothers, because they never fail to offer something interesting to think and talk about. For example, ‘Roadside Picnic’ (on which Andrei Tarkovsky’s ‘Stalker’ was loosely based).
I read Roadside Picnic last year and enjoyed it. I love Stalker (and all of Tarkovsky’s work for that matter) so the source material was a must read. I’ll check out Hard to Be a God
Agreed Matt, I’d also say Star Trek Beyond was the best 2016 film.
