Don’t feel bad about renting for so long, Matt. First, you weren’t wasting money: you were paying for a service. You also didn’t waste all the money you spent on food all those years.
Buying a house is not an automatic financial win. Say you buy a house for $100,000, you’re halfway to paying off your mortgage, and something happens to drop the value of your house in half. Now you still owe $50,000 on a house that’s worth $50,000, even after already paying $50,000.
Or you could have bought a house and paid so much in maintenance that it would have been better to rent and save.
Or you could have bought a house when single and then after you got married and had children you decided you wanted to live in a different neighborhood for her job, schools, etc.
Not trying to bash home owning! (We’re planning to own eventually.) Just don’t like it when people feel like they wasted money renting when it makes sense in many situations.
