The Sci-Fi Christian Stocking Stuffer Day 2

December 18, 2011

During the Stocking Stuffers series here on the site the other writers might write about sci-fi Christmas things they really enjoy and want to share with all of you.  In my case, I want to share with you the cheesiest sci-fi Christmas thing I ever did lay my eyes on. And I mean that in a good way. When I first saw How the Sith Stole Christmas,” I liked it as a Star Wars fan but didn’t love it as much as Matt loves LOST. It’s not your average Christmas holiday special that you watch with your family as you gather by the glow of the TV set. This animated short was made back a few year ago as a fan film. It was originally intended to be a trilogy, but that plan failed. Ted Bracewell, the writer, director, producer and star of the short, only got to make the first installment. “How the Sith Stole Christmas” follows Darth Vader in his plan to steal Christmas from the Ewoks. Meanwhile, the Empire moves in on the North Pole on Christmas Eve to stop Santa. The film also follows the elf, Marvin, who plays the Luke role in that he wants to be a part of something bigger. I feel that the premise is the best part of the short. No, wait–the Boba Fett cameo is the best part of the film. The short has no sense of chronology as we see elements from both trilogies melded together. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but it does mean we have to sit through some of the sludge of Episode 1-3. When you watch this, I suggest you don’t watch it for the value of the animation. As an artist, I can tell you that the animation is rough, stiff and looks rushed. The acting is also sub par. So, after all that bashing, why should you watch it? Some of you die hard Star Wars fans may really get a kick out of this; however, others like me may only want to watch this for the parody value. Some of the parody elements do bring a smile to my face. There are references to The Hobbit, Charlie Brown and even Citizen Kane that film geeks will appreciate. I also like the jab at Jar Jar they give. It’s worth at least one viewing.

I was enjoying it — especially the bit about Boba Fett having his melancholy little Christmas — but wasn’t expecting it to end with the bad guys winning! No parts 2 or 3 yet?

At any rate, very funny and very clever. I’m glad you shared this with us! (I missed the Jar Jar jab, though… can you clue us in?)
