In a Galaxy Far, Far Away…

October 30, 2012

Well, it looks as though we may be getting a new Star Wars film much sooner than anyone had ever expected. In probably the most noteworthy news of the day, Lucasfilm has been purchased by Disney! Not only that, but they are already prepping a new Star Wars movie for a 2015 release.

EW.com posted a quote from George Lucas himself in lieu of the announcement:

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said Star Wars creator and Lucasfilm CEO George Lucas in a statement. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”

I have plenty of thoughts on this, but being that it this news is so fresh, I might need some time to take it all in.

Stay tuned to the SFC for more regarding the topic, including a more in depth article and response from our very own Disney expert/enthusiast, Daniel Butcher!

  2. Cautiously optimistic? Optimistically pessimistic?

I know the type of movie I hope comes out of this — something fun, exciting, and family friendly — and if that happens, I win! If it’s a huge, colossal debacle, I lose nothing except a few dollars.

Either way, George Lucas is swimming in the money bin with Scrooge McDuck.

Allan Reini My first reaction: Aaaaaaaaaaargh! Then my rationalization defenses kicked in and I thought, “Hey maybe a Star Wars film without George turning it into his own personal playground would be nice. As we all know, the best Star Wars film, ever–Was NOT directed by George. (if we have to name it here, we are sad for you.)

  4. Ben and Allan : I’m excited about this. I know that long time fans will be 50/50 on this news, but I think that it has the potential to be great (as long as the script is good and they have a good director). I think a director like Guillermo Del Toro could be interesting. He seems capable of a good story and creating weird creatures. Obviously, if you’ve seen any of my stuff on this site, you know that I love Joss Whedon and have always and will always praise whatever he does–so who knows, maybe Disney will have him direct all of their movies! He’s a proven money-maker.

  5. Max,
I could be very enthused about your directorial choices. It would be especially interesting to see the same care and detail that went into weekly (weekly!) Firefly episodes combined with the totaly fun, escapist, big-screen adventuring that was The Avengers. So, yeah, I lean somewhat Whedonistic myself.
