As I walked by the “book bin” in my local Staples, I saw a Michael Crichton book for a buck fifty! Well, that is a sure thing, so I picked up “Pirate Latitudes” and gave it a read. …I overpaid. The publisher should be ashamed to put that out. I have two guesses: the first is that a high schooler sent him a manuscript to read, and it just happened to be on his computer when he died; the second guess is that he wrote it in high school, and was thinking about rewriting it when he died. ‘Timeline’, ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Congo’, even ‘Sphere’ (which was bleh) had ideas and, even if the story in your head was better than the story he wrote, they were something you enjoyed reading. ‘Pirate Latitudes’ was just stupid. It is so obvious that this wasn’t a finished work.
