  1. Ben, I must concede your point. If I go by expectations alone, Emma should not receive my most disappointed vote. That would go to The Ocean at the End of the Lane instead.
Matt, while I think it is good that you are starting to read Dekker again (he has written some good books), I don’t know if Immanuel’s Veins is the best place to start. Veins was Dekker’s attempt to writing something more in the horror genre, which I’ve gathered you are not a fan of. I would recommend AD 30 or The Priest’s Graveyard as alternates to ease back into Dekker (though the latter of those is a bit grisly).
Great show and I’m glad to hear you’re going to do more books episodes!

    • Thanks for the heads up on that, Jesse. Have you read the Circle series by Dekker? I heard that “Immanuel’s Veins” ties into that series. Is that true? Would you recommend skipping “Immanuel’s Veins” and trying “Forbidden” instead? I mostly want to read books that tie into the Circle series, so please direct me.

      • I’ve read the Circle series (though, the original trilogy is the best). As for those that tie in, Immanuel’s Veins does tie in, but only in minor ways. The only books that really add anything to the Circle lore (I guess that’s what to call it) are the Showdown Trilogy (Showdown, Sinner, Saint) and the Lost Books (Infidel through Elyon). Books like House, Immanuel’s Veins, Skin, etc. only reference the Circle books and aren’t really adding to the lore. As such, Immanuel’s Veins can be skipped, but if it interests you go for it.
The Books of Mortals, starting with Forbidden, are good books, but I don’t think they are tied into the Circle trilogy.
I think I remember having heard you talk about reading the Showdown trilogy, so I would direct you to the Books of Lost (the first four are the best, but the last two continue the story) if you want books that are related to the Circle cycle. I hope that helps.

  2. Okay, my “evil plan” was to read “one book Ben wouldn’t like” so that I could make his skin crawl every time that book got a “best book I read this year” or “most challenging” vote next year. But…it is too late, I have already read (listened to) a whole series of books this year so that wont happen.

  3. Gahhhh, love this!!!!
