Regarding Call the Midwife, I think a lot of men assume it’s a show just for women, but it’s actually an outstanding period piece- based upon the memoirs of a midwife in the 1950’s in London’s East End. These women operated on the front lines of life in difficult circumstances. Before the ubiquity of birth control, it was not uncommon for women to have 10 or so pregnancies, and medical science in the field was still developing. It’s well shot, written, and acted, and I highly recommend the books the show is based upon by Jennifer Worth. They give more historical information about the living conditions and poverty women had to give birth in, and how the field progressed from the Victorian era to the 50’s. Historically, men have been quite ignorant about childbirth and all it entails, and wrongly so. You can stream the first 3 seasons on Netflix.
