SyFy’s Next “Big” Thing?

January 11, 2013

Time and time again, the Syfy network has disappointed fans by canceling shows like Farscape, Stargate Universe, and Sanctuary (programs that actually provide fans with a sense of wonder and imagination); or not even giving shows like Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome a chance. Rather, the channel that is supposed to be a beacon for all things science fiction/fantasy/horror, has taken the route of multiple reality shows and professional wrestling, as they are proven money makers for major networks.

On April 15th, 2013, however, Syfy, will be airing a two hour premier of a new science fiction show entitled, Defiance. Interestingly enough, they are not only marketing this program for television, but are creating an online MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) that will in some ways be connected to the television series. ComicBookMovie.com explains:

“Set in the near future, Defiance introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully. Each week, viewers will follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, MO, while in the game, players will adventure in the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.

The series, produced by Universal Cable Productions, is executive produced by Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica; Hellcats) & Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica). Kevin Murphy serves as showrunner. Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest) directed the pilot; Michael Nankin will serve as supervising producer/director on the series. The game was named “Best MMORPG” from GameSpy at the recent E3 conference in June 2012 (among other accolades).”

From what I’ve gathered around the internet, it will be unnecessary to participate in one to enjoy the other; however, if online gaming and science fiction television are both of interest, the entire experience can be quite interactive. Below are trailers and promos for the show and MMO:

The show reminds me of a cross between Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, The Walking Dead, and Falling Skies. The whole concept seems pretty intriguing and with all of the money already put into the project through development of both the show and game as well as advertising for the two properties, it seems as though Syfy is banking on Defiance being a hit. I think I’ll check it out, especially the show. How about you?

Ever since they changed their name to SyFy things have gone downhill.

This really looks like they’re trying to have a hardcore science fiction show though, their first in a very long time. I hope they get back to doing more real science fiction.
