New Star Trek Into Darkness Motion Poster

February 18, 2013

Paramount has released  a new motion poster for J.J. Abrams new film Star Trek Into Darkness including elements from both the teaser poster and teaser trailer. I think Paramount made a wise decision in focusing it’s marketing  around Benedick Cumberbatch. It’s reminiscent of the use of Heath Ledger’s joker in the marketing for The Dark Knight.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

  1. I can only hope that a significant character dies. It would be pure shock, and that is what people want (knowingly or not).

I dunno, deaths in franchises like this are about as impact-ful as deaths in ongoing comic books: Not Very.

Exactly, if they kill Spock (who is the likely candidate) they’ll have to bring him back in the next one.

I have no real reason to think this is so, but if they are going to kill off someone, I wonder if they might not kill off Uhura? Last movie, Spock lost his mother and his home planet and most of his race, but managed to keep it together – but what if the death of Uhura (at the hands of Cumberbatch/Khan/whoever he is) is that “last straw” he just can’t take? Sets up a third film that could be “searching for Spock” in a whole new sense of the phrase.

Again – nothing but speculation here. But if I were Abrams & co. and wanted to shake things up through a death (which I don’t know if I would want to), that’s what I’d do.
