I had my doubts: how could they top X-Men First Class? How could they possibly make sense of the jumbled mess of the first three X-Men films? Well, if the first trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past is any indication, I should doubt no longer. This looks beautiful:

X-Men: Days of Future Past is directed by Bryan Singer and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Evan Peters, Ellen Page, Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy, Anna Paquin, Peter Dinklage, Halle Berry, Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Shawn Ashmore, Lucas Till and Daniel Cudmore.
For the most part, I think this looks pretty good. A shame about Storm’s hair, though. Anyway, I must say, the image embedded above the trailer is fantastically designed.
While I thought X-Men: First Class looked horribly cheap and silly, this looks like it will mesh both cinematic X-Men worlds together, soundly.
Some say that you can’t tell Disney owns Marvel, but quite frankly, the X-Men world is the best of MCU because it does not have that goofy Avengers campaign feel, which I believe is totally Disney. The fact that the movie was labeled “Marvel’s The Avengers” is evidence of Disney’s logo-bloated-brand-recognition complex.
The first two X-Men weren’t perfect films but they were the best superhero entries since the dawn of the superhero movie of the twenty-first century. X-Men 3, X-Men Origins: Convoluted Title: Wolverine were lacking. First Class was cheap and silly but had its moments, and I haven’t seen The Wolverine. But The Wolverine feels like damage control for the original X-Men canon.
Now, why do you suppose they didn’t say “Director of Superman Returns” in the Bryan Singer credit? 😉
Hey Wes, I agree with you on some aspects. While I don’t think that the MCU movies are all cinematic masterpieces, I do think they are fun and entertaining and remind of comic books way more than any other comic book movie. So, I enjoy them.
You are completely right that the first two X-Men movies were pretty good and that X-Men 3 and the Wolverine spin-offs should be forgotten about; however, I think X-Men:First Class was a solid story and the best X-Men movie to date. I have a feeling that Days of Future Past will actually be the movie to right the wrongs of the others and do damage control. Makes sense considering Bryan Singer is directing it (and he directed the first 2 but had nothing to do with Last Stand or the Wolverine monstrosities). I’m not saying Bryan Singer is without fault, he did direct a Superman film in which Superman was a womanizing stalker, but he might be able to fix the mess that is the X-Men franchise.
Yeah, the X-Men movies and that ’94 film, The Usual Suspects, is what made Singer an accepted big time director. He blew it with Superman Returns, but now I’m glad he’s getting a chance to forget all that and come home.
Here’s to hoping the movie’ll be a good one.
