Outstanding episode, guys! I appreciate your continued willingness to engage literary and historical criticism of the Bible, modeling how, so far from diminishing faith, it can enhance it. (That, at least, has been my experience). Ben does a great job presenting the material… and, Matt, well done with making the Daniel connection on those wild beasts! (“Matt was right!”)
The best book I’ve ever read on Mark is a short but substantial one, “A Master of Surprise” by Donald Juel – highly recommended. (It covers a lot of the same material as Ben’s professor, although maybe not with the liturgical angle – but certainly Mark as apocalypse is not brand new. And I know the theory about Mark 16.8 sending us back to Galilee in Mark 1 (if not specifically v. 35 – interesting) has been around a while – see, e.g., Luke Timothy Johnson’s “Writing of the New Testament”)
I do have to say, this episode’s title threw me at first… thought it was part of your ongoing X-Files retrospective!
PS. I don’t know all the ins and outs of the Catholic diaconate, but I’d be willing to bet, as Matt does, that Ben would be good at it!
