Somebody Saaaaaave Me… (Comics News)

February 9, 2012

Thought you’d seen the last of a hesitant, angst-ridden, everyone’s-fulfilling-his-or-her-destiny-but-me Clark Kent with the (admittedly, pretty satisfying) series finale of Smallville? Think again!

Today, the official DC blog, The Source, announced that Bryan Q. Miller will be penning “Season Eleven” of Smallville for the comics. Each new adventure will premiere as a digital comic, collected monthly for the paper-and-ink crowd (luddites like yours truly). Quoth The Source:

The new comic book series picks-up where the show left off (with Clark officially now as Superman!) and features other fan-favorite characters including Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, Chloe Sullivan-Queen, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and General Lane.  The book features an all-star creative team – in addition to Miller, SMALLVILLE SEASON 11 creators include print cover artist Gary Frank (SUPERMAN SECRET ORIGIN), digital cover artist Cat Staggs and interiors by Pere Perez (BATGIRL).

Actually, I was affectionately teasing the show earlier. For its first few seasons, Smallville was not only one of the most consistently entertaining shows on TV but also one of the most creative takes on Superman’s origin we’ve seen. In addition to having written for the TV series, Miller wrote an outstanding, if all-too-brief, Batgirl just before the debut of “The New 52,” so watching him handle Smallville‘s cast of characters again, especially with the help of his Batgirl buddy Perez, could be fun.

What do you think? Are you up for some red-and-blue, blurry flights back to the Man of Tomorrow’s Kansas home–or are you more than ready to move on (as I thought Clark himself was…)? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Michael, thanks for posting this. I was a huge fan of Smallville, so this news was pretty exciting to me. I am not sure if I will start reading it right away. I might take some time before picking the series up (possibly in trade paperback).

Yeah, unless one is already a digital comics reader, trade will likely be the best way to go. I neglected to mention in the news item that the comic wil be appearing weekly, so that’s going to be a lot to keep up with! It does, however, showcase the potential of the digital media as a home for weekly comics. I can’t think of any successful, original, ongoing weeklies – I know IDW is reprinting “The Walking Dead” on a weeky basis, but wasn’t DC’s “Trinity” the last weekly effort, and that’s been, what, three or four years now? I don’t believe it was all that well received, either (I know I didn’t stick with it past issue 10 or so).

As I said, in my judgment, “Smallville” was really great for its first three years or so. I also enjoyed season eight – I tuned back in for the Legion of Superheroes’ appearance, and stuck with it ’til the end pretty much. If it hadn’t been spread out for a decade, I think it would have been top-notch — and, even as it is, I think its first few years will stand the test of time.

Also, given the “Superman” comic book that appeared in the series finale, this is the next natural step!
