September 14, 2011

Ben and Matt tackled their favorite Sci-Fi theme songs on the latest official Sci-Fi Christian podcast.  Their lists were great, but lacked a few of my favorites.  Here is a list of my personal favorite themes songs (excluding the ones mentioned on the podcast) from Sci-Fi TV and movies.  Be sure to check out the podcast to hear their great lists of favorites as well.

  1. like

  2. what about firefly, I would also count twilight zone

    • I agree, but those were mentioned in the podcast. I was avoiding the ones that were mentioned by Ben and Matt.

  3. Twilight Zone is great by the way. Very iconic.

Yes indeed, although recently I’ve grown very fond of Bernard Hermann’s original theme for “Twilight Zone.” It’s one, unified piece of music (unlike the more famous one, which is actually two different short pieces by the same composer spliced together), and is both lovely and spooky all at the same time.

  4. I’d forgotten how good the music was for Caprica and SCC. I didn’t care for the Carnivale theme when I first heard it, but it’s one of those that grows on you because of how well it fits the show. It is a bit long though for a tv theme.

Even though I get myself in trouble every time I talk about Star Trek, I gotta say that the Enterprise theme song seems really cheesy. Maybe it works in the context of the show, but listening to it independently it didn’t work for me at all. The Voyager theme was very good though

    • i’m a trekky and i agree. yeah i thought that Enterprise’s theme really was cheesy. why they went with the underpaid, out-of-work 80s glamrock singer is beyond me. plus the original theme is too sedate for my taste. they redid the theme with more guitar and…with drums. it was better, but it still had teh stink of cheese. lol

  5. Carpica, SCC, and BSG had the same composer, Bear McCreary. I adore practically all of his work. Amazing composer. He even congratulated me on my wedding day since we used his music.

I adore the Carnivale theme so much. Same composers as the show Heroes. In fact, there is a lot of crossover between the two shows, but I didn’t care for Heroes too much after the first season. I love how the opening of Carnivale transports you in the time of the show. I am not sure why it makes Roosevelt so ominous at the end. Poor guy.

Yes, the Enterprise theme is terribly cheesy. So is the show, but in some way, I like it. It is like how you can’t stop watching a car crash or sucking air through a cavity even though it hurts.

    • Bear McCreary is amazing. If we’d been doing any film/tv piece instead of just themes, Something Dark is Coming may very well have been my number 1. Have you checked out his youtube page? He’s been putting up videos of himself doing solo piano on several BSG pieces.

      • I’ve heard it was good. Yeah, I’ve seen a few of his videos on there.

I know of some good video game music as well. Let me know if you guys go that direction someday or if it just done in the form of feedback.

        • This is timely http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=7144

I doubt we’d do anything on video game music but I’d love to see your list. Send it in!

          • Nice! That cover for the CD is wierd looking. When you said the name of that song, I got it confused with the video game he did music for called “Dark Void.” That is why my mind went to video game music. Ha! maybe I’ll make a list for you anyway.

Dang, I forgot how much I loved the T:SCC music.

I have always been particularly fond of the 4400 theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMBcyt_CRM4

  7. that song for Moon is EPIC!!!! i still havent watched that movie yet…

Big fan of the late Basil Poledouris. Robocop and Conan are two excellent themes. And if you want iconic, what about Alan Silvestri’s Predator score.

    • I will have to check those out… honestly, don’t make me give up my geek card, but I haven’t seen any of those movies… But I do know who Alan Silvestri is, and I think that is worth some points back.

I was VERY excited to see that Voyager not only made the list, but number 1 too! It is such a great orchestra piece.
Another fave of mine not mentioned by Ben and Matt is the Dollhouse. It is nothing extraordinary, but I just love listening to it!!
    Thanks for the post!

    • Michael Sep 21, 2011

Alyssa, you are absolutely right about the “Dollhouse” theme! I think it actually is pretty extraordinary. It’s deceptively simple. It’s a tune that really persists in your memory long after the show is over (not unlike the way the Actives’ imprints persist in their minds despite all those “wipes”?)

      • I hated the Dollhouse theme the first time I watched the show and then it really started to grow on me. I like the toybox sound to it. Very nice! I think I should have added it now.

And I’m glad to hear there is a lot of Voyager love out there. Somehow the music really related captain Janeway.

I bet this is one of the stranger ones people will mention (well, ok, likely only I will mention it), but it has always been one of my favorite genre themes. It has stuck in my head all these years, since 1979, and I only recently rediscovered it. I had remembered it note for note. How can you not love a show where Andy Griffith builds a spaceship out of junk to go to the moon?
